Ubisoft’s crossover shooter XDefiant recently entered open beta, giving the community a chance to provide feedback on the game, for better or worse. One feature in particular has drawn ire: the game’s in-match commentary, which some fans are describing as the most annoying feature they’ve ever encountered in a game.
#1 player on XDefiant Beta gets BANNED…
Granted, automated in-match commentary is nothing new in gaming. In fact, games like Team Fortress 2 make it part of the appeal, injecting the world with a level of depth and personality through intelligently written and well-delivered voice lines. The trick is finding that balance between usability and entertainment value, but it feels like XDefiant’s take on this mechanic falls short.
XDefiant has been available for less than 24 hours, but players are already complaining about the implementation of match commentary on social media. One Reddit post called it "the most annoying thing I've ever heard in a video game," with most of the criticism directed at the frequency of the voice lines. With every conceivable in-game event, from deaths to kills to objective updates, getting its own joke, players can quickly become overwhelmed.
Worse yet, there is apparently no delay between each voice line, meaning that multiple can be activated in the space of seconds depending on how hectic a particular match is. Finally, with only a small pool of voice lines to choose from in the first place, repetition will quickly begin to irritate all but the most patient of players.
