An XVID file uses the Xvid video codec library. It is not a video format like MP4, but a program used to compress and decompress video to the MPEG-4 Part 2 Advanced Simple Profile (ASP) encoding standard to conserve disk space and improve file transfer speeds.
Thanks to the compression that Xvid content supports, a full-length movie can typically be compressed enough to maintain DVD quality and still fit onto a CD.
Although you may have a file with the .XVID file extension, many file containers store Xvid video content. Having a video that uses this codec does not determine the file extension. For example, depending on who created it, the file may be named something like video.xvid.avi for an AVI file.
