Apple won't force you to update to iOS 15 when it releases, but experts say users looking for the best privacy features should download the new version as soon as possible.
Do NOT update to iOS 15 before doing this!
iOS 14 added several consumer-focused features that gave consumers more control, and Apple plans to add even more with iOS 15. One way the company is giving users more control over how they use their phones is by not forcing them to update to the latest version of iOS when it's released. Instead, Apple plans to let users stay on the previous version and provide additional security updates for it. However, experts say the additional privacy benefits that iOS 15 brings make the update worth it.
"The new privacy updates really do give users more control. The improvements demonstrate a level of transparency for consumers and give them insight into how their information is being shared," Kim Komando, a digital lifestyle expert with a focus on privacy and consumer technology, told Lifewire in an email. "Consumer privacy is a huge issue today, and Americans already have little trust in the tech industry."
Since introducing more privacy-focused features in iOS 14, Apple has continued to update its operating systems with more ways to limit the tracking and collection of data. App Tracking Transparency, which added a prompt to help users understand what data is being collected by new apps, was just the beginning. With iOS 15, Apple plans to introduce new privacy features that users will want to use.
