The election season takes up enough mental space as it is, so Reddit is offering its users an opportunity to maintain some sanity by giving them the ability to opt out of political ads.
YouTube Regrets Banning Ad Block
The news came in a broader post on r/redditsecurity yesterday, where an admin said the company has updated its list of “Sensitive Advertising Categories” to include ads related to politics and activism. This means you can opt out of these topical ads using the site’s existing ad filtering tools, according to an update to the Reddit Changelog also released yesterday.
Politics and activism join alcohol, dating, gambling, weight loss, and pregnancy and parenthood in the list of ads you can filter. A new category has also been added: religion and spirituality.
To opt out of political ads (or any ads in the categories above) on your desktop, go to reddit.com and click on your profile page in the upper-right corner of the page, then click on the gear next to "Settings." Select the "Preferences" tab and scroll down to the bottom of the page to find the "Limit ads in selected categories" button. Click it to expand a list of toggles, then choose which ads you want to limit and click "Done."
