Attention bargain hunters and bulk buyers: Costco appears to be tightening its membership policies. In an update to its website, the company said that in the coming months, shoppers will be required to physically scan their cards at the store entrance and compare them to the photo that appears for that card’s account. In other words, the days of borrowing a membership card to check out without purchasing your own membership are over.
How to Shop at Costco Without a Membership!
But don’t say goodbye to buying in bulk just yet: There are still a few ways to shop in-store without committing to an annual membership. The price of one is going up $5 (to $65) on September 1. Consider these “creative” solutions that will keep you in the know about Costco even as they take a tougher stance on non-member shopping.
Costco’s official policy states that anyone can shop at warehouse locations if they present a “Shop Card,” also known as a gift card. These cards can be purchased at Costco, and electronic versions are available online. Here’s the catch: These cards can only be purchased by members and with a debit or credit card that matches your Costco account name. That means that in order to take advantage of this flaw, you’ll need a friend with a membership who’s willing to buy you a gift card.
Don’t worry about getting caught using this circumvention method: it’s perfectly acceptable under Costco’s policies. According to this Costco customer service FAQ page , “Non-members and members may use Costco Shop Cards to shop at any Costco location in the U.S.” Once you’re in, you can pay for your items using your own personal payment method. That means you can use a $25 gift card to get in, and then spend as much as you want.
