When I open YouTube these days, it’s usually a mess. Sure, the videos they suggest I watch seem vaguely similar to the type of content I’m interested in. But I usually just scroll past most of the noise until I see something decent to click on. More often than not, the videos I enjoy watching most on YouTube are the ones I find myself, either through search or through channels I subscribe to.
How to Disable Watch History on YouTube
YouTube is changing the way its homepage works, at least for some of us. You might log in one day and see nothing but a search bar, a blank space, and a message: Your watch history has been disabled.
As reported by The Verge , YouTube is removing homepage recommendations for anyone with paused viewing history, as well as those who “have no significant prior viewing history.” If you meet those qualifications, your YouTube homepage is going to look pretty bare. You better know what you want to watch, because YouTube definitely won’t be recommending anything to you.
You don’t need another algorithm in your life, monitoring your every move and trying to keep you engaged by serving up targeted content, especially when that content isn’t even relevant in the first place. In fact, you’ll find that your social media experience is better the less you use these algorithms. YouTube is a great example: the site is much more fun when you search for the content you want to watch yourself. In fact, you’ll find far more relevant recommendations in a Reddit thread than you will in the site’s own algorithms. (And have you ever had the misfortune of opening the YouTube app on a browser when you’re not logged in? Horrible.)
