Researchers have discovered a new way to track you across the internet using your computer or phone’s graphics processing unit (GPU). It’s part of growing concern among security professionals about the information trails users leave behind that could have privacy implications.
"Because it's unrealistic for a user to open their system and replace their GPU every time they go online, this potential new method of tracking individuals could prove to be a significant hurdle for privacy advocates. Legal action, such as new laws, may be needed to protect the privacy of users who wish to remain anonymous online," Frank Downs, senior director of proactive services at cybersecurity firm BlueVoyant, told Lifewire in an email interview.
