It’s the modern age, where some people make contactless payments with their phones, while the truly brave get payment implants. Surprisingly, most of us still use cards, authenticating transactions with insecure means like PINs and passwords. Samsung says it has created the industry’s first all-in-one fingerprint security integrated circuit (IC) for payment cards. The chip reads biometric information using a fingerprint sensor, stores and authenticates the data with a tamper-resistant Secure Element (SE), and analyzes it with a secure processor.
“Using a fingerprint security chip doesn’t require you to remember a PIN or manually cover the PIN pad when entering that number to prevent attackers from stealing it,” Therese Schachner, Cybersecurity Consultant at VPNBrains, told Lifewire via email. “[The] security chip can also provide greater convenience compared to other authentication mechanisms.”
Schachner added that the chip's SE and secure processor, which uses techniques such as encryption, also prevents attackers from disrupting critical system functionality and accessing the fingerprint data stored on the card.
