According to a new report from internet provider Comcast, internet users vastly underestimate how often their home networks are targeted by cyberthreats.
The report highlights the growing threat of cyberattacks as more people work from home during the coronavirus pandemic. In one survey, respondents estimated the average number of attacks was 12 per month, but the actual number is 104. But there are ways to defend your home from attacks.
“The most important way to protect yourself online is to stop and think before you click on a link or open an email attachment,” said Noopur Davis, Comcast's chief product and information security officer, in an email interview.
“If it looks suspicious, it probably is. Another easy way to protect yourself is to use multi-factor authentication wherever it’s offered. Also, turn on automatic updates on devices, including any connected cameras, smart thermostats, printers, or voice assistants. Use strong, unique passwords, and enable broadband connection security provided by your ISP.”
