The long-gone action buttons on phones may be making a comeback.
Will the next iPhone have an action button?
Code found in the fourth developer beta of iOS 17 seems to suggest that an action button will be coming to the upcoming iPhone 15 Pro models. According to experts, the new button would be useful for users.
"Smartphones started out with an action button, but after a certain point, they kind of went away," wireless industry analyst Jeff Kagan told Lifewire in an email interview. "Users loved action buttons, so I'm not sure why smartphone makers got rid of them. The reason given was so the screen could be bigger. That might have made sense then, but it doesn't anymore because there are so many different devices."
The next iPhone is said to convert the mute button into an action button, similar to the one on the Apple Watch Ultra. The new button could bring up various iPhone-specific features and settings.
