Update: According to Business Insider, Nintendo has revised the number of affected accounts to 300,000 based on further investigation.
3 SIGNS YOUR PHONE HAS BEEN HACKED!🤯
Nintendo has announced that approximately 160,000 player accounts have been compromised since April. They are advising all players with a Nintendo Account to enable two-factor authentication (2FA) to protect their data.
How it happened: Nintendo says hackers gained access to an older sign-in system called the Nintendo Network ID (NNID), which was used in the past for Wii U and 3DS systems. The company allowed that older system to connect to the newer Nintendo Account, which was used for Switch users.
What to do: Nintendo has now deprecated this connection, making the NNID obsolete (and no longer able to compromise newer accounts). It also recommends (and provides step-by-step instructions for) enabling 2FA on your Nintendo Account.
