For those of us who love Barnes & Noble’s Nook e-readers, it’s been a long, sad journey into obsolescence. Today, the company announced in a support document that several older models, including the Simple Touch, Simple Touch with GlowLight, and GlowLight, will soon lose the ability to use a Nook account and purchase new books, starting in June 2024.
Older Nook tablets can no longer purchase e-books
It may not be a contest these days, but in its early days the Nook stood out as a solid alternative to Amazon’s Kindle. It had better expansion and hardware buttons for turning pages, a key feature for some. These models were introduced in 2011-2013 and are now only useful for the content already on them.
These models can no longer buy new content and you can no longer log in with a bn.com account. You can also no longer register the devices with a bn.com account. This locks them in a kind of digital amber.
Once that happens, SimpleTouch, SimpleTouch GlowLight, and Glowlight owners will only be able to remain registered with a bn.com account already on the device, read the content you have on the device, and connect to Wi-Fi (but not to download new B&N books or other media).
