It's been over a quarter century since Tom Wolfe's A Man in Full hit store shelves, but the tale remains as relevant (and ripe for film adaptation) as ever. Now, Netflix has unveiled the first look at the limited series adaptation of the tale, and it looks like this star-studded look at the downfall of a Southern real estate magnate will be a gripping affair indeed.
A Man in His Whole | Official Trailer | Netflix
Written and produced by David E. Kelley and directed by Regina King, A Man in Full centers on Charlie Croker (Jeff Daniels), a real estate magnate who suddenly goes bankrupt and must fight to save his empire from others.
The novel, which was Wolfe's second overall, offers a scathing presentation of high society in Atlanta, Georgia, and its main character is widely regarded as an amalgamation of several real businessmen from the era. It contains themes of revenge, racial tensions in the city, and political entanglements.
In the series trailer, everyone wants to defeat Croker—or at least, in Lane's case, try to force his seemingly inevitable downfall. But Croker is determined to win this war. His tenacity is on display when he fearlessly picks up a snake to terrify his family. He's later heard to say, "I'm stronger than all of you put together" and that enemies who try to defeat him are a "gift." Meanwhile, his enemies train to "kick his ass" and throw some vocal punches. "It would be insensitive to fight you given your diagnosis," says one opponent. "We've obtained your medical records. It turns out you're an asshole."
