Alamo Drafthouse has added five new screens to its Downtown Brooklyn movie theater, a major upgrade for the chain's first New York location and the highest-grossing theater since it opened in 2016.
Alamo Drafthouse in City Point Undergoes Major Renovation
The chain of eateries, movies and arthouse cinemas, which was acquired by Sony in June, also has bought six theaters in Dallas-Forth Worth and Woodbury, New Mexico, that were suddenly closed by a franchisee. Those theaters are reopening one by one this month.
The Brooklyn upgrade, which will catch Deadpool & Wolverine’s second weekend, includes new recliners and projection throughout. The five auditoriums add 256 seats (for a total of 978), all leather recliners with eat-in turntables. Each features laser projectors, RealD 3D, 70mm and 35mm capabilities on select screens.
The renovation was done in phases so that the theater never closed. And it comes amid an optimistic moment for movie theaters, with CEOs at major chains from AMC Entertainment to Cinemark to Marcus all recently noting a rebound in attendance in June after a first half that was dampened by the impact of the 2023 Hollywood strikes that shut down much of the production.
