A major film studio just bought Alamo Drafthouse Cinema
Alamo Drafthouse is dedicating its newly renovated downtown Brooklyn theater to Spike Lee. The director synonymous with all things New York will be honored on Sept. 12 with a ceremony and screening of his semi-autobiographical 1994 film, “Crooklyn.” Lee will also participate in a live Q&A.
The private event will include the unveiling of the Spike Lee Cinema plaque, which reads: "Like many of the greatest films of the past 40 years, this theater is a Spike Lee Joint. From his nuanced portraits of Brooklyn life in 'Do the Right Thing' and 'Crooklyn' to his towering portrayal of 'Malcolm X,' his vision shaped our culture and left an indelible mark on this city. For that reason, beginning Thursday, September 12, 2024, this Alamo Drafthouse Cinema will forever be known as the Spike Lee Cinema."
The dedication news coincides with the theater’s recently completed upgrade and expansion. Originally opened in Brooklyn’s City Point complex in 2016 with seven screens, Alamo Drafthouse has revamped the venue with five new auditoriums equipped with laser projectors, as well as RealD 3D, 70mm and 35mm capabilities on select screens. Those auditoriums will feature premium leather recliners equipped with personal turntables for enjoying the in-seat food and beverage options that have made Alamo Drafthouse a favorite among cinephiles.
