Trial over shooting in Alec Baldwin film 'Rust' dismissed after prosecutors withheld evidence
In a dramatic turn of events, Alec Baldwin's trial on involuntary manslaughter charges for the 2021 fatal shooting of Rust camerawoman Halyna Hutchins was dismissed Friday due to "crucial evidence" that a New Mexico judge ruled was suppressed.
“The State has repeatedly informed the defense and the court that they have complied with all of their discovery obligations,” New Mexico District Judge Mary Marlowe Sommer said in her ruling. “Despite their repeated statements, they have still failed to provide crucial evidence to the defendant.”
“The state is deeply guilty of failing to provide evidence to the defendant,” Sommer added in a measured tone. “Dismissal with prejudice is warranted,” she concluded.
