Robert Zemeckis is one of our greatest living filmmakers. From genre-defining films like Romancing the Stone and Back to the Future to beloved classics like Forrest Gump, Zemeckis is always pushing the boundaries. Even his missteps are interesting, as he continues to push the boundaries of visual effects. He’ll soon be reunited with Tom Hanks in Here later this year, but the new Allied Blu-ray reissue gives us a chance to revisit one of his lesser-talked-about films.

Official Trailer of Allied 1 (2016) – Brad Pitt Movie

"From the director of Forrest Gump and Cast Away comes a must-see romantic thriller (Mark S. Allen, ABC-TV). When intelligence officer Max Vatan (Academy Award nominee Brad Pitt) learns that his wife (Academy Award winner Marion Cotillard) may be secretly working with the enemy, he has just 72 hours to prove her innocence and save his family before he has to do the unthinkable," the synopsis reads.

Originally released in 2016, Allied had two excellent choices to spin a romantic drama around — Brad Pitt and Marion Cotillard. The two both deliver excellent performances, and the film is beautiful to look at, as the World War II fashions lead to great looks for the leads and an interesting backdrop for the drama. The two have excellent chemistry, even if the war drama is a little uneven in its overall execution.

What I admire about Zemeckis is that, with the exception of the Back to the Future trilogy, he rarely makes the same type of film twice. Allied has little in common with his previous romance and war films, but is instead a unique mix. Never one to take things for granted, Zemeckis always offers a big swing, and that shows in the production quality of Allied.
