The American Film Festival of Poland continues to focus on independent American films, ignoring the Hollywood blockbusters and bigger-budget auteur films from smaller film festivals.
Using film festival events to raise money and build community
“The festival selects a very precise type of project: they are truly independent films, not in the sense of less than $40 million,” says director and producer Rob Rice.
"The people who come with them have a kind of shorthand with each other. We're all dealing with the same things and we're all trying to mislead the industry by confusing our films with 'real films.'"
“There are always a lot of interesting things happening in American independent cinema. It’s enough to name three alumni of [festival’s industry sidebar] US in Progress: Anu Valia (“We Strangers”), India Donaldson (“Good One”) and Sarah Friedland. They are great examples of new female voices talking about female experiences and keeping things intimate and personal,” says artistic director Ula Śniegowska.
