The schools that postponed the start of classes for the 2024-2025 school year only account for about two percent of the total number of elementary schools in the country, Department of Education (DepEd) Secretary Sonny Angara said on Monday.

According to DepEd data, a total of 842 schools were unable to resume classes after being hit by Typhoon Carina and the enhanced southwest monsoon, which affected 803,824 students.

"It's quite small because it's only almost 2 percent of the entire country. So, it means 98 percent of the schools are open," Angara said in an ambush interview at Carmona National High School in Cavite.

Angara said he visited schools to personally assess the opening of classes.
