Apple takes on EU firm Vestager in record $14 billion tax battle
Apple has lost a battle against a European Union decision that it owes Ireland €13 billion ($14.3 billion) in back taxes.
The EU's highest court, the European Court of Justice, upheld the European Commission's 2016 decision that Ireland had given Apple around €13 billion in illegal tax benefits related to the tax allocation of profits from the Irish branches of two subsidiaries of the tech giant.
Also on Tuesday, the European Court of Justice upheld a €2.4 billion ($2.6 billion) antitrust fine against Google, originally imposed by the European Commission in 2017 on Google "for abusing its dominant position in several national online search markets by favouring its own comparison service over those of its competitors."
