Under the direction of directing duo Radio Silence, who last worked on the fifth and sixth “Scream” films, “Abigail” grossed just $10 million.
But while this has shaken some observers' faith in the horror genre, it really shouldn't have, as the first quarter was tough for a number of scary movies (see chart above).
First, there’s some stiff competition to contend with. Despite the momentum of Radio Silence and a strong cast, “Abigail” lost out in its second weekend to A24’s No. 1 film “Civil War” and the debut of Guy Ritchie’s new action film for Lionsgate, “The Ministry of Ungentlemanly Warfare.” The latter film stars Henry Cavill and, like “Abigail” and “Civil,” is also rated R.
