Armie Hammer announced he's starting "a new life in Los Angeles" in a video posted to Instagram on Tuesday, in which he says he has to sell his truck because he "can't afford gas anymore."
Armie Hammer forced to sell favorite truck after cannibalism scandal led to 'career death'
"I've been back in L.A. for a couple weeks now," Hammer says in the video, which was filmed at a CarMax location in California. "This is my truck. I bought this for myself in 2017 as a Christmas present, because I've had pickup trucks for a long time and I love this truck. I've taken it camping and across the country and on long road trips. … Since I've been back in L.A., I've put about $400 or $500 in gas in it, and I can't afford it."
Hammer lived (and worked as a timeshare salesman) in the Cayman Islands after becoming a Hollywood pariah amid sexual assault allegations brought against him in 2021. As a result of the allegations — which included rape, cannibalism fantasies and forcing partners into BDSM scenarios — the “Social Network” and “Call Me by Your Name” actor dropped several projects, was dropped by his publicist and agent, and became the subject of an LAPD investigation. Ultimately, no criminal charges were filed against Hammer, who denied the allegations and maintained that all the relationships were consensual.
In recent months, Hammer has returned to the media spotlight, giving interviews on Bill Maher's podcast "Club Random," Tom Arnold's show "Painful Lessons" and "Piers Morgan Uncensored." He has maintained that all allegations of sexual abuse are false, while also admitting to other "shit behaviors" such as cheating on his wife and "using people to make me feel better." Hammer has said that being "cancelled" and banned from the entertainment industry was "liberating," but he has also announced that he has written a screenplay that reflects on his life and hopes to return to filmmaking.
