Daughter's TikTok videos of father's murder cited in ballerina murder trial
A Florida court has found Ashley Benefield guilty of manslaughter in the death of her husband, Doug Benefield. Reports indicate that authorities discovered Doug Benefield’s lifeless body in September 2020 at his mother-in-law’s home in Manatee County, Florida. After authorities arrived, Doug’s estranged wife, Ashley Benefield, said she shot him multiple times in “self-defense.” Just prior to the sentencing, Doug’s daughter from his first marriage, Eva, also spoke out about her father’s death, claiming that Ashley did not shoot in self-defense.
According to Inverse, Eva Benefield gained recognition after creating a custom T-shirt for her business. The outlet reported that she promoted the clothing on her TikTok and saw impressive results. Her boss then launched a new brand, Ghost Cowboy, so Eva could sell her designs. While her brand proved to be successful, Eva also used the platform to talk about her father’s death. In one of the TikTok videos, she talked about how she wanted Ashley Benefield to go to jail.
Eva Benefield also has a podcast about her past. During the interview with Inverse, Eva shared that she loves how her videos help people in so many ways. She said, "I've been getting so many DMs lately from people saying that my videos help them in some way, and that's why I'm so grateful for TikTok and the platform that I have. The fact that people have told me that I make them feel less alone warms my heart so much." While she was testifying in the Black Swan murder trial, Eva Benefield was asked to leave the courtroom by a judge after she allegedly broke a rule and gave an interview to a news station.
