Asif Kapadia sees a future vision for the world in which “Chairman” Ivanka Trump celebrates her 30th anniversary as leader of the nightmarish fascist police state that was once America, a country largely left in ruins after an unknown “catastrophe” that occurred in 2036.
2073 2024 Movie by Asif Kapadia – Official Trailer – 4K Ultra HD 3D
“It’s kind of a joke, but also not a joke,” the British filmmaker says of the mention of Donald Trump’s daughter in “2073,” his chilling docudrama about the dystopia humanity may be hurtling toward and the very real and very contemporary factors around politics, the environment, corruption, race and technology that he believes are driving us there.
"Because if you look at American politics, you see that certain families just stay in power. The number of people that come from a small gene pool is insane," he says.
While Ivanka's addition may be a bit of a humorous twist, the rest of "2073" — which is backed by Neon, Double Agent and Film4 and makes its world premiere Tuesday in Venice — offers little else to cheer about. The film is what Kapadia calls his reaction to the world — and the entertainment industry — having gotten to a "place where people can't say anything" that criticizes the status quo or those in power without risking losing their jobs or worse.
