Australia's federal government said Tuesday it will introduce legislation this year banning children from accessing social media, although the exact age has yet to be determined.

The plan, announced by Prime Minister Anthony Albanese, follows measures by other governments in the Asia-Pacific region to curb online media, particularly social media.
Many in the region worry that social media platforms are fueling addictive behavior, bullying, gambling and cybercrime. Albanese called the impact of social media on young people a “plague.”
Governments in Malaysia, Singapore and Pakistan have all tried to take action against social media companies in recent months, though the reasoning and methods vary. And this week, Malaysia halted its plan to reroute internet traffic and implement a “kill switch.”
