As I was collecting garments, a few things about the obsessed woman came to mind. “It was all about the missteps, the clashes, the prints, the tones, the awkwardness,” Bailey says.
Based on the one-man play by Richard Gadd, the series follows Donny Dunn (Gadd), a fictionalized version of the comedian, as he attempts to transition from bartender to comedian while being stalked by Martha (Gunning), a woman who sends him thousands of emails and harasses his family and girlfriend (Nava Mau). As time goes on, she becomes increasingly unstable and threatening.
Bailey prepared by spending a lot of time alone, people-watching. "There's a woman in my neighborhood, and I see her at least once a month. She sits outside this bus stop," he says. "I was constantly trying to build up visual references, and I ended up with a collection of real references, along with references from TV and film."
