Aug 5 (Reuters) – Sheikh Hasina, who resigned as Bangladesh's prime minister on Monday and fled the country after weeks of protests, has been one of the dominant figures in the country's politics since the assassination of her father, independence leader Sheikh Mujibur Rahman, almost half a century ago.

Her flight came less than seven months after she celebrated her fourth consecutive term in power – and her fifth in total – by winning a national election in January that was boycotted by the main opposition party.
The 76-year-old woman was flown to India in a military helicopter along with her sister on Monday to seek refuge, media reported.
Her last 15 years in power were marked by arrests of opposition leaders, restrictions on freedom of expression and the suppression of dissent. She resigned after deadly student protests broke out, killing hundreds.
