What would Battlestar Galactica look like if it launched today?
Ronald D. Moore on Why Battlestar Galactica Is More Relevant Than Ever | Comic Con 2024
That was the question posed to Ronald D. Moore, the superproducer who returned to his native San Diego Comic-Con on Thursday to discuss his life's work with former muse Mary McDonnell.
McDonnell, who played President Laura Roslin on the sci-fi series, wondered whether Moore's 2004 retelling of the 1978 Battlestar Galactica series would look and sound different today, given the current state of politics and our culture.
"I mean, the story itself would probably be different because I wrote it at a specific time in our lives and in our history," Moore said. "I was approached to do the project just a month after the 9/11 attacks. As it was being developed, it was happening and then we had Iraq and Guantanamo Bay and we were dealing with the Patriot Act and a lot of freedom versus security issues with terrorism in the modern world and fundamentalism. I wanted the show to speak to who we were at that time. So if I were to recreate Battlestar Galactica today, I don't know … it's so hard to let go of what the show has become."
