Welcome to Global Breakouts, Deadline’s biweekly column where we spotlight the TV shows and movies that are doing well in their local territories. The industry is as globalized as ever, but breakout hits are popping up all the time in parts of the world, and it can be hard to keep up. So we’re going to do the hard work for you.
This week we head to the westernmost point of Europe to find out why Irish dramedy Faithless became a hit in a country with an illustrious history of comedy creation. Written by and starring Baz Ashmawy, best known for his TV travelogues and Sky’s 50 Ways to Kill Your Mammy, the darkly comic series charts the struggles of a widowed Irish-Egyptian father in County Wicklow to raise three young girls, while exploring issues of grief, gender roles, identity and acceptance.
