Darren Star tried to lead the teen sex revolution in the early 90s and it almost went on television.
The Emmy Award winner recently recalled that network executives "demanded" him to write an episode of Beverly Hills, 90210 in which Brenda (Shannen Doherty) expressed "regret" after having sex with her boyfriend Dylan (Luke Perry) in the penultimate episode of the 1991 first season, "Spring Dance."
"When all these affiliates realized what they had aired, a lot of them were upset," Star told Vulture. "And it wasn't just the fact that Brenda was having sex, but that she was enjoying it. When we came back for the next season, they demanded that there be an episode where she was repentant. I was like, I can't believe I have to write this. She was having a pregnancy scare. She was realizing she was too young to be having sex."
He noted that the first season of the popular teen drama featured "a lot of edgier episodes" because network executives apparently "weren't paying attention" to what they were putting on the air. When 90210 blew up for Season 2, execs suddenly had "a lot of notes."
