Billy Bean, second Major League Baseball player to come out as gay, dies at 60
Billy Bean, a former Los Angeles Dodger who later became Major League Baseball's first diversity chief, died Tuesday. He was 60.
Major League Baseball said in a statement that the cause was acute myeloid leukemia, but did not provide details about the location.
Bean was the second major league player to come out as gay. Glenn Burke, an outfielder for the Los Angeles Dodgers and Oakland Athletics, came out after retiring in 1982. Bean retired in 1995 after playing for the Dodgers, Detroit Tigers and San Diego Padres.
