UPDATED FRIDAY AFTERNOON: Ryan Reynolds currently holds the lead over Blake Lively, as Disney/Marvel Studios' Deadpool & Wolverine is headed for $53 million for its third weekend and It Ends With Us has opened in the mid-$40 million range. Friday plus previews for the Justin Baldoni-starring and directed film are now at $23.2 million, while D&W is at $15 million, down 46%.
Some rivals want to call It Ends With Us neck-and-neck with D&W, but it's too early to tell. Female-led films can fall significantly on Thursdays and Fridays, given pent-up demand, such as in the 40th percentile on Saturdays excluding Fridays/previews. 2014's The Fault in Our Stars, based on John Green's best-selling novel, grossed $8.2 million in Thursday previews, followed by a $26 million opening Friday and a $12.6 million Saturday, -53% off Fridays/previews combined for a $48 million opening. See how that works?
