Longlegs Sets Records for Neon; Despicable Me 4 Holds Ground – Charts with Dan!
Editorial Director/Box Office Editor
UPDATED, Sunday morning: Illumination/Universal's Despicable Me 4 took home the weekend with $44.6 million, but Neon's Nicolas Cage and Maika Monroe-starring Longlegs stole the headlines, delivering the year's best original horror opening so far and the best start ever for the 7-year-old distribution company run by Tom Quinn, with $22.6 million.
That’s a huge win for original films, a much-needed boost for the horror genre, and a big win for the arthouse circuit, which we hear sold out multiple times this past weekend, with extra showings in theaters. All told, it’s the seventh-highest-grossing weekend of the year, according to ComScore, with $129 million across all titles.
