Everyone knew Marvel's Deadpool & Wolverine would be a huge box office hit, but few expected it to be this big.
BRIE LARSON ATTACKS RYAN REYNOLDS AFTER DEADPOOL & WOLVERINE BOX OFFICE REACHES RECORD HIGH FOR MARVEL!
The buddy comedy barreled its way to a massive $205 million domestic cume and $438.3 million worldwide. That's easily the biggest opening for an R-rated film, easily surpassing Deadpool and Deadpool 2's $132 million and $125 million respectively, and the fifth-best opening for the MCU. D&W has already surpassed the lifetime grosses of X-Men ($296 million), X-Men: First Class ($355 million), X-Men Origins: Wolverine ($374 million), X2: X-Men United ($407 million) and The Wolverine ($416 million), and should easily slice through the remaining X-Men and Deadpool films on its way to $1 billion. It will likely pass Joker's $1.78 billion cume to claim the title for highest-grossing R-rated film of all time.
Audiences gave the Ryan Reynolds/Hugh Jackman vehicle a 97% Rotten Tomatoes score (compared to a 79% critics' score), with many taking advantage of the premium format. According to the industry, PLFs accounted for 30% of weekend ticket sales, including $19.1 million from Imax screens in North America and $36.5 million from Imax screens worldwide.
Also of note is that D&W's massive haul pushes the MCU past the $30B mark, the first to do so. For comparison (and ignoring inflation), the #2 franchise, Star Wars, has made $10.3 billion, according to The Numbers . Wow.
