Deadpool & Wolverine ($395 million) just became the highest-grossing R-rated film in its home territory, surpassing Mel Gibson's The Passion of the Christ ($370.7 million), Deadpool ($363 million) and Deadpool 2 ($324.6 million) after a strong 97 million (-54%) sophomore year. Worldwide, Shawn Levy's comic book team-up has grossed a whopping $824.1 million and shows no signs of slowing down. If it keeps up the pace, D&W should easily surpass the $1 billion box office and land in the top 10 grossing films in the MCU.

Elsewhere, M. Night Shyamalan's Trap earned $15.6 million in its opening weekend, a decent debut for an August thriller but a bit low for the director's best efforts. At this point, only Wide Awake ($95,000) and Knock at the Cabin ($14 million) have opened with less. Remember when Signs debuted with $60 million? Yeah, those days seem like a long time ago. Trap will likely end up with Knock at the Cabin-esque numbers thanks to a meh C+ CinemaScore.
Sony's family comedy Harold and the Purple Crayon opened to $6 million in 3,325 theaters. The moral of the story? We don't need big-screen adaptations of every children's book on the market.
D&W should clean up again this weekend, as Eli Roth’s Borderlands is the only wide release on the schedule. The action-comedy is expected to bring in between $10M and $20M. Things get juicier a week later when Fede Alvarez releases Alien: Romulus , which could bring in as much as $43M in its opening frame.
