August continues to deliver big numbers. Blake Lively's adaptation of Colleen Hoover's novel It Ends With Us scored big, taking in a whopping $50 million from 4,230 theaters. That's a big leap from Sony's Where the Crawdads Sing ($17 million) and another reminder that female-led dramas, especially those inspired by books, tend to draw strong box office.
Borderlands: It gets WORSE…
As big as that number was, Lively couldn’t beat out husband Ryan Reynolds’ Deadpool & Wolverine , which grossed $54 million in its third weekend and has now grossed $1.029 billion worldwide. The Marvel team-up action/comedy still has a long way to go if it wants to surpass Inside Out 2 ($1.593 billion) as the top-grossing film of 2024. Currently, Shawn Levy’s film sits at #48 worldwide on the highest-grossing films of all time.
Elsewhere, Eli Roth’s video game adaptation, Borderlands, disappointed with a measly $8.8M . Ouch. The $110-120M film received poor reviews (9% on Rotten Tomatoes) and failed to generate much interest despite its Guardians of the Galaxy-esque vibe.
Finally, NEON's Cuckoo grossed a solid $3 million against a $7 million budget, according to Deadline.
