Men overwhelmingly dominate the gaming industry. According to a 2017 report from the International Game Developers Association, people who identified as women only made up about 21% of the gaming industry.

But women are rising up in the industry, creating games with female characters and advocating for more female voices in the larger gaming institutions.

One such woman is Brianna Wu, a dedicated gamer and advocate for women and politics. She was so fed up with games geared toward men that she decided to create her own game, tailored for everyone.

“It made me so angry that women were the damsels in distress who never got to be the heroes,” Wu told Lifewire in a phone interview.
