Netflix is known for its “gourmet cheeseburger” approach to TV programming, and any good cheeseburger producer knows that the logical next step is a franchise.

It’s been clear for a while now that Netflix is pursuing more franchise plays; before Season 2 of “Wednesday” even went into production, a spinoff was already in development , while 2022’s “The Gray Man” was explicitly intended to kick off an “expanded universe.” Not surprisingly, both animated and live-action “Stranger Things” spinoffs are also in development.

The streamer even acquired a slew of Roald Dahl IP in 2021 with the intention of “building a universe of animated and live-action films and TV, publishing, games, immersive experiences, live theater, consumer products and more.”

But it's only recently that it's really become clear that this strategy is paying off and that the streamer actually has franchise-worthy intellectual property.
