Hospital Wrongly Accuses Girl's Mother of Mysterious Symptoms | Maya Kowalski Case Analysis
The documentary Take Care of Maya was released on Netflix last year. It chronicled the Kowalski family’s struggles after 10-year-old Maya, who was suffering from a rare disease, was admitted to a hospital. She was suddenly taken into custody after medical staff wrongly accused her parents, Jack and Beata Kowalski, of child abuse.
As seen in the documentary Take Care of Maya, Maya Kowalski had advanced complex regional pain syndrome (CRPS). According to the Cleveland Clinic, it’s a rare neurological disorder that causes extreme pain and other symptoms. When Maya was taken to Johns Hopkins All Children’s Hospital in 2016, doctors suspected child abuse.
According to NBC News, the hospital's medical team suspected that Maya's mother, Beata, had Munchausen syndrome by proxy. Doctors refused to believe that the then 10-year-old had CRPS. It led to Maya being separated from her family for months after the hospital team falsely accused her parents of abuse.
