A handful of surviving films confirmed their resilience during an otherwise deathly quiet weekend at Chinese cinemas.
Alien: Romulus joins Prometheus as only the second Alien film to reach an impressive box office milestone
Chinese crime film “Go for Broke” (also known as “Chong Sheng”) earned RMB35.4 million ($5.0 million) between Friday and Sunday, according to data from consulting firm Artisan Gateway. That puts it at the top of its fourth weekend of release and gives it a cumulative $53.4 million.
“Alien Romulus,” which had topped the chart for the previous three weeks, fell to second place. The film earned $4.5 million, becoming only the second Hollywood import this year to earn more than $100 million in Chinese theaters (after “Godzilla x Kong”).
"How to Make Millions Before Grandma Dies," the Thai-produced comedy-drama, saw its week-on-week earnings decline but its chart position improve. The film earned RMB18 million ($2.5 million) to rank third, up from $3.3 million and fifth a week earlier. Since its release in China on Aug. 23, it has collected RMB105 million ($14.8 million).
