BEIJING, July 27 (Reuters) – Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi has warned the Philippines against deploying U.S. medium-range missiles, saying such a move could stoke regional tensions and spark an arms race.
Chinese foreign minister warns Philippines over US missile deployment
The United States sent its Typhon missile system to the Philippines earlier this year as part of joint military exercises. It was not fired during the exercises, a Philippine military official said later, without giving details on how long it would remain in the country.
China-Philippines relations are at a crossroads and dialogue and consultation are the right path, Wang told Philippine Foreign Minister Enrique Manalo on Friday at a meeting in Vientiane, the capital of Laos, where top diplomats from world powers gathered in preparation for two summits.
Wang said relations between the countries are being tested because the Philippines has “repeatedly violated the consensus of both sides and its own obligations,” according to a statement from China’s Foreign Ministry.
