The Butcher Brothers bring us a bloody film full of forest creatures with Consumed, but it fails to create enough tension to be memorable for many other reasons.
CONSUMED (2024) Official Trailer (HD) CREATURE FEATURE | Devon Sawa
Getting lost in the woods is an age-old horror movie gimmick, and there have been plenty of examples over the years of just how much variation you can get with the concept. From The Blair Witch Project to Evil Dead II and beyond, the woods have a dangerous allure based on the raw, ancient power of nature. Throw in the supernatural and it can be a great template for nightmare fuel.
Mitchell Altieri and David Calbert, aka The Butcher Brothers, reunite to attempt to do just that with Consumed. Their penchant for making effective low-budget horror films puts them in a good position, and the premise is simple but intriguing enough to hold promise.
Married couple Jay (Mark Famiglietti – Premonition, Terminator 3, Bionicle: The Legend Reborn) and Beth (Courtney Halverson – Unfriended, Keith) used to be avid travelers. Beth’s cancer diagnosis changed that, but now that she’s in remission, they decide to go on a celebratory camping trip. There’s natural love and tension between the two as Jay struggles to help Beth regain her independence, and tempers flare over the turmoil of the past year or so.
