A cross worn by former Pope Benedict XVI on his chest has been stolen from a church in southern Germany where it was on display, police said Tuesday.

The pectoral cross was located in a display case in the wall of St. Oswald Church in Traunstein, Bavaria, where the late Benedict spent his teenage years.
Thieves broke into the safe and stole the object that the former pope had bequeathed to the parish between 11:45 a.m. (09:45 GMT) and 5 p.m. (15:00 GMT) on Monday.
“For the Catholic Church, the value of this sacred object cannot be quantified,” the Bavarian police said in a statement.
