In addition to showrunning, Kane will also serve as series creator, writer and executive producer. He takes over from Bryan Fuller (Star Trek: Discovery, Hannibal), who confirmed his departure from the project in May, noting that "A24 has chosen to go in a different direction with the material."
Crystal Lake’s plot details, which were first announced in October 2022, are being kept under wraps. In addition to Kane, the series’ executive producers include A24; Victor Miller, who penned the screenplay for the franchise’s 1980 film; Miller’s copyright attorney, Marc Toberoff; Robert M. Barsamian and Robert P. Barsamian. The project marks A24’s first major IP-driven endeavor amid a recent push to expand in a more commercial direction.
"From the moment I saw Jason Voorhees squeeze a man's eyeball out of its socket (in glorious 3D!) at the age of 8, I knew my creative path would one day intersect with The Man Behind The Mask," Kane said in a statement about his appointment to Crystal Lake. "Nothing defined my childhood more than growing up in the golden age of the slasher film, and nothing defined the genre more than Friday The 13th . I couldn't be more excited for the opportunity to contribute a chapter to this iconic franchise, especially with such fearless partners as Peacock and A24."
