EXCLUSIVE: Not only is it just a week and a half until San Diego Comic-Con kicks off on July 24, but the fanboy confab also coincides with another major event this summer: the massive opening weekend of Marvel Studios' Deadpool & Wolverine, which is expected to become the biggest R-rated debut of all time at the U.S. box office, surpassing Deadpool's $132.4 million gross (previews begin Thursday, July 25).
The Shawn Levy-directed films represent a new era for Disney's MCU with edgier, adult fare and finally unite 20th Century Fox's Marvel stable with the Marvel Cinematic Universe. It's not often that an MCU film premieres on the same weekend as SDCC, and a galactic bloom is about to begin. Marvel Studios president and executive producer Kevin Feige is the first to tell Deadline what's in store for Comic-Con — read: fanboys get two nights of the MCU in Hall H next week — and the comeback of superhero pics.
