Robert Downey Jr. Turned Down an Iron Man Cameo in *Deadpool & Wolverine* – Here's Why

Downey Jr. played Tony Stark/Iron Man in the MCU for over a decade, before killing off the character in 2019's Avengers: Endgame. In July 2024, it was announced that Downey Jr. would return to Marvel Studios; however, he will now play the villain Doctor Doom.

Speaking to IndieWire, Deadpool & Wolverine writers Rhett Reese and Paul Wernick revealed that they originally wrote a scene that would have seen Downey Jr. return.

"We wanted him to come out. We had that scene written [to begin with] with Happy and Downey," Wernick said, referring to an early scene in the film in which Wade Wilson (Ryan Reynolds) tries to convince Happy Hogan (Jon Favreau) to let him join the Avengers.
