CM Punk challenged Drew McIntyre and demanded that he come to the ring. McIntyre came and expressed his desire for a confrontation with Punk. Despite the intense tension, McIntyre said that he was not ready for a physical fight at that moment. Punk ignored McIntyre and, fueled by anger, rushed him on the ramp for an expected fight.
Before the two could get into a physical confrontation, WWE Raw General Manager Adam Pearce stepped in and ordered security to separate McIntyre and Punk. Pearce sternly warned that if either of the two threw the first punch, they would be suspended. He also said that their actions had caused too much chaos and had given him a refereeing problem.
Amidst the chaos, Seth Rollins made his way to the ring. As security held Punk and McIntyre back, Rollins announced that he would be the special guest referee for their SummerSlam match. Both Punk and McIntyre made their displeasure clear, while Rollins danced and laughed. Drew McIntyre appeared to remain frustrated by the announcement, as he issued a challenge to Rollins on X (formerly Twitter).
