At the end of Season 3 of "Hacks," co-creator, co-showrunner, executive producer and writer Jen Statsky said that the relationship between Deborah Vance (Jean Smart) and Ava Daniels (Hannah Einbinder) had reached a point it had never seen before — and that the writers had to find a way to manage the comedy and emotional stakes that followed.
"You always want to be funny first and think about the comedy and the jokes, but their relationship is very real, very fraught, very difficult," Statsky said. "And that gives us a lot to play with, too."
