It appears ABC can be relieved that two Emmys in one year didn't result in two consecutive ratings lows.
I watched the 2024 Emmys so you don't have to
Just eight months after the 2023 Emmy Awards, which were delayed for months due to the Hollywood strikes, the actual 2024 broadcast drew 6.87 million viewers on ABC last Sunday night, according to Nielsen. That statistic is an impressive 54% increase over the rescheduled broadcast, which hit an all-time low of 4.3 million viewers.
The Emmys also have good news from the important 18-49 demographic, which rose 17% to a 1.02 rating, up from last year's 0.87.
These latest ratings lend more credence to the idea that January’s Emmys were a victim of bad luck and timing rather than a larger trend of decline in viewership. On top of the strikes that pushed it several months behind schedule, that ceremony aired just a week after the Golden Globes, which honored many of the same films and shows, and at the same time as the NFL Playoffs and the GOP Iowa caucus.
