The prestigious EGOT club just welcomed two new members: songwriters Benj Pasek and Justin Paul
Ardmore's Benj Pasek in line to achieve EGOT status
The duo, who already won an Oscar for "La La Land" and a Tony and Grammy Award for "Dear Evan Hansen," secured their EGOT with an Emmy win for "Which of the Pickwick Triplets Did It?" from "Only Murders in the Building" (co-written by Marc Shaiman and Scott Wittman), winning for best song.
Speaking to Variety for Making a Scene , the show's co-creator said, "It came to me in the shower. I literally thought, 'Oh, which one of the Pickwick triplets did it?'" Hoffman recalled. "The cop character, played by Steve in the play, was on a mission to find out which one of these little baby triplets might have killed their mother — which is ridiculous, but delightfully ridiculous to me."
On writing the song, Pasek said, "Our job was to try to write something that's as hard as possible to sing, and that really has to trip the tongue and that really has to be something really, really hard to do all at once. That works to our advantage plot-wise, because the question really is, can this character pull it off? And over several episodes, he can't. It gives us something to really cheer for over the course of the season."
